On September 17, 2025, Trump’s administration unveiled changes to the naturalization test. These changes will be comprehensive, including an increase in the number of questions, extension of the subject matter, a requirement for a credit report, and neighborhood investigations about each candidate, along with the requirement of writing an essay about the applicant’s perspective on the meaning of U.S. citizenship.
Some of these changes were introduced in the 2020 version of the exam, during Trump’s first administration, prior to USCIS reverting to the 2008 model after the Biden administration took office. The changes are expected to be in effect on October 20th, 2025. Thus, applications submitted after that date will be subject to these changes.
